PM SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Government of India with the vision to transform more than 14,500 existing schools across the country into model schools. These schools are managed by the Central/State/UT governments or local bodies, including prestigious institutions like Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVS). PM SHRI Schools are designed to provide high-quality education in an inclusive, equitable, and joyful learning environment. These schools will serve as exemplary institutions, offering students a safe, well-equipped, and stimulating space for holistic learning, with modern infrastructure and digitally enabled classrooms. The initiative places strong emphasis on the foundational pillars of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, such as experiential and competency-based learning, integration of art and sports, vocational training, Indian knowledge systems, and environmental sustainability.
The PM SHRI schools will also focus on foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN), critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Each school will incorporate green practices such as solar energy usage, rainwater harvesting, and waste management. To ensure educational equity, these schools will support inclusive practices for children with special needs and promote gender sensitivity. Regular teacher training, community participation, and school leadership development will be integral components of the program. More than 20 lakh students are expected to directly benefit from this initiative. The scheme will also act as a laboratory of innovation—its best practices and successful models will be scaled up and replicated across other schools in the country, thereby improving the overall quality of education.
The scheme is being implemented over a five-year period from 2022–23 to 2026–27. A structured and transparent selection process ensures that only eligible schools with the potential for excellence are chosen. These schools are monitored using the School Quality Assessment Framework (SQAF) to ensure accountability, effective implementation, and continuous improvement. PM SHRI is not just a school development program—it is a mission to nurture future-ready, responsible, and confident citizens capable of leading the nation in the 21st century.
